Camosun presents revered author and Dalai Lama friend, Pico Iyer, May 17
Camosun College’s Insight Speaker Series wraps up its 8th season with award-winning travel author and friend of the Dalai Lama, Pico Iyer, May 17 at the McPherson Playhouse.
Iyer is a world-renowned cultural reporter and author of The Open Road: the Global Journey of the Dalai Lama. Iyer will discuss globalism, how we define culture and the place we ultimately call home.
A global traveler from birth
Born in 1957 in Oxford, England, to parents from India, Iyer was a traveler from birth. He grew up in California and now resides in Japan. As a student he won a King's Scholarship to Eton and then a Demyship (scholarship) to Magdalen College, Oxford, where, graduating with a Congratulatory Double First in English, he received the highest marks of any student in the university. He went on to acquire a second Master's degree in literature at Harvard, where he taught literature and writing for two years.
Iyer’s many essays, reviews and articles have appeared in Time, Conde Nast Traveler, Harper’s, the New Yorker, Sports Illustrated and Salon.com.
He is also the author of eight books including: Video Night in Kathmandu (1988), The Lady and the Monk (1991), Falling Off the Map (1993), Cuba and the Night (1995), Tropical Classical (1997), The Global Soul (2000), Abandon (2003) and his latest work, The Open Road (2008).

30 years of conversation with the Dalai Lama
After three decades of conversation with the Dalai Lama, The Open Road captures the paradoxes of the Dalai Lama’s position: though he has brought the ideas of Tibet to world attention, Tibet itself is being remade as a Chinese province; though he was born in one of the most remote, least developed places on Earth, he has become a champion of globalism and technology. He is a religious leader who warns against being needlessly distracted by religion; a Tibetan head of state who suggests that exile from Tibet can be an opportunity; an incarnation of a Tibetan god who stresses his everyday humanity. The Open Road illuminates the hidden life, the transforming ideas, and the daily challenges of a global icon.
In 1995 Iyer was named by the Utne Reader, along with Noam Chomsky and Vaclav Havel, as “one of 100 visionaries worldwide who could change your life.” His many accomplishments include writing a film-script for Miramax, initiating the Hart House Lecture series at the University of Toronto, helping name an internationally known soft drink and being named a Fellow (twice) of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions during a half hour question and answer period. Tickets are $22.25 for adults and $14 for students (includes service fees) available through the McPherson Box Office, 250-386-6121.
