Camosun College faculty co-authors first Canadian edition of accounting textbook

Tana Kristjanson and are both chartered accountants, teachers and now authors. Kristjanson and Elworthy co-authoured the Canadian first edition of Accounting. The textbook was published by Nelson Education Ltd. in February.
Tana Kristjanson teaches accounting at Camosun College’s School of Business. Dr.Elworthy taught at Camosun College, and is currently Vice-President, Learning, at the CA School of Business (CASB), the credentialing body for chartered accountants.
Accounting(First Canadian Edition )is based on the best-selling US textbook by Carl Warren, James Reeve and Jonathan Duchac.
“This edition has been thoroughly adapted for principles of accounting courses in Canada,” says Kristjanson.“Sheila and I were asked to write the textbook with pedagogical innovation and advancement in mind.” Accounting features an integrated learning system called the “Guiding Principles System”(GPS) to help students easily locate the information they need to master course concepts.

Student focus groups and an editorial advisory board of accounting faculty from across Canada resulted in real-world examples and financial analysis plus interpretation sections in the textbook that connect students with the real practice in the Canadian business world.

Bios
Dr. Sheila F. Elworthy
Dr. Sheila F. Elworthy, CA, is the Vice-President, Learning, at the CA School of Business (CASB). In Western Canada, aspiring chartered accountants obtain their CA designation by enrolling in the CA School of Business.
Elworthy taught introductory, intermediate and advanced accounting, plus general business courses for 20 years at Camosun College, the University of Victoria, the Eastern Institute of Technology in Napier, New Zealand, and in the Executive Certified Management Accounting (ECMA) program. She previously worked as an Investigator for the Professional Conduct and Ethics Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of BC.
She received her MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business in London, Ontario, and her Doctor of Education from Simon Fraser University. In 1984, Sheila qualified as a chartered accountant in Ontario.
In addition to her professional pursuits, Elworthy is active in Big Brothers Big Sisters, and currently serves as the Treasurer and the Chair of the Finance Committee. Her personal interests include spending time with her husband and three children, playing bridge, cycling, kayaking and skiing.
Tana M. Kristjanson
Tana M. Kristjanson, CA, is an instructor in the School of Business at Camosun College. She has also taught accounting at North Island College, Vancouver Island University (formerly Malaspina College) and in the Certified Management Accounting (CMA) program. Kristjanson currently teaches introductory and intermediate courses in financial accounting and auditing. In addition to co-authoring the Accounting textbook, she has developed a college-level forensic auditing course.
Her professional interests focus on the use of reflection and student feedback as mechanisms to improve teaching. Kristjanson became a chartered accountant in 2004, and spent a number of years in public practice working for business, not-for-profit organizations and native council clients.
Her personal interests include hiking, travelling and spending time with her husband, friends and family.
