Camosun Library receives donation of Japanese works from Morioka College

President Laurin and Professor Terui In her first formal international event as Camosun College’s new President, Kathryn Laurin welcomed a group of 14 visitors from partner institution Morioka College, and accepted a generous donation to the Camosun Library. Students, staff and faculty gathered at the Lansdowne campus to participate in the Morioka College library donation ceremony on Monday, September 14. The donation of approximately 70 books and CDs includes a range of materials highlighting Japanese language, literature, history, geography and pop-culture. “It is hoped that the donated materials will stimulate interest by Camosun College students, faculty and staff in Japanese language and culture, and broaden awareness within the Camosun community of our longstanding and cherished relationship with Morioka College,” said Dawn Sutherland, Director of Camosun College International. Professor Yoshiyuki Terui and students from Japan’s Morioka College were on hand to officially present Camosun with the donation. Morioka exchange students Nami Hisaki and Ayumi Hosokawa delivered an address from both their college President, Yoshitsugu Mochizuki, and PTA Chair, Keiko Fujimura. “We are so thankful and excited to add this wonderful collection of Japanese literature to our library,” said Sybil Harrison, Camosun’s Chief Librarian. “These important materials give those in our community who do not have the opportunity to travel to Japan a chance to experience and learn about Japanese culture.” The cities of Victoria and Morioka signed a formal partnership agreement in 1985 following the 50th anniversary of the death of Dr Inazo Nitobe, a widely respected Japanese diplomat and philosopher, who died in Victoria in 1933. Following the official “twinning” of the two cities, Camosun College and Morioka College entered into a formal agreement in September 1987. Since then, many initiatives including Intensive English Language programs at Camosun for Morioka students (annually since 1988), reciprocal academic exchanges (since 1988), admission of Morioka College students into Camosun’s academic programs, and education material exchanges, have taken place. “Our long and very successful partnership with Morioka College is something of which Camosun College is very proud, and we very much look forward to continuing this strong relationship for many years to come,” said Kathryn Laurin, President of Camosun College.
