Vehicle donation helps mechanics students

Mazda Canada brings Christmas early to Camosun’s Automotive Mechanics students.

This week George Benda, Service Training Instructor for Mazda Canada, officially handed over the keys of a demonstration Mazda Tribute SUV to Camosun’s Dean of Trades and Technology Dr. Tom Roemer.
The donated Tribute has all-wheel drive and a 3.0 litre V6 engine. Automotive Mechanics Program Leader Kyle Broad says it’s the “perfect training vehicle” for his students.
“We thank Mazda Canada for this donation,” says Dr. Roemer. “Having newer vehicles on site really helps our students to practice their new knowledge on the latest in automotive technology. This gives them marketable, practical skills to be successful out in the industry.”
Thirty-four students are currently taking Camosun’s Automotive Mechanics Repair program; 16 second-year apprentices and 18 Foundation students. The 30-week long Foundation program gives students the skills to become automotive service technician apprentices and covers the tools, equipment and skills to service automotive systems including brakes, exhaust, front-ends and more. It also provides students with accreditation toward year one of apprenticeship training.
Automech students not the only winners this month
Earlier in September, Camosun Heavy Duty/Commercial Transport alumnus Richard Norton, who works at Nixon Brothers Truck Repair, brokered the donation of a mid-sized transport truck from Brewers Distributors.
“It’s a tandem-axle Ford cabover with a diesel engine,” explains Heavy Duty/Commercial Transport Program Leader Norm Dishkin. “It has an automatic transmission, 24-foot box and a hydraulic tailgate – it’s a beauty and great addition to our program!”
“We can’t run our trades programs without the generosity and support of industry partners like Mazda Canada and Brewers Distributors,” says Dr. Roemer. “Our budgets are extremely limited and there is a high cost to acquiring these vehicles for training purposes. Close partnerships and wonderful donations like these help us provide Camosun students with the best and most up-to-date training in the industry.”
