While 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Brian Price is best known for his motivational skills as the iron-willed coxswain of Team Canada’s Men’s Eight Rowing crew, he will be motivating guests in a slightly gentler manner at the Harbour Towers Hotel on Friday, September 25th, presenting the keynote address at Camosun’s Third Annual Chargers Tip-Off Dinner.
During his international career, Brian has been crowned a World Champion three times in the Men’s Eight (2002, 2003 and 2007). He has also competed in the Men’s Coxed Pair at the World Championships three times where he won a bronze medal each time (2003, 2006 and 2007). Brian has been part of crews which have won seven medals in World Cup rowing events, including five gold, one silver and one bronze, along with three Grand Challenge Cup trophies at the prestigious Royal Henley Regatta in England (2002, 2003 and 2007).
Without question, the ultimate achievement of his 10-year career on the National Rowing Team was crossing the finish line to win the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics—a victory that completed a long line of comebacks for Brian.
Born in Belleville, Ontario, Brian was diagnosed at age seven with leukemia which he battled for five years. Emerging as a winner in this fight, Brian suffered from a damaged thyroid gland due to the chemotherapy treatments and drugs he had taken which left him physically undersized compared to his sibling brother and his friends at 5’4” tall. Not willing to let this obstacle stand in his way, Brian found something positive in the negative as he turned his attentions toward the sport of rowing.
While not big enough to be one of the rowers, Brian joined the Quinte Rowing Club in 1995 and quickly found that the real power in the boat was in the hands of the coxswain. Brian graduated in 1998 with an honors diploma in Civil Engineering Technology from Seneca College in Toronto but chose to pursue a career in rowing rather than in engineering. He has never regretted that decision!
A current resident of Victoria, Brian has taken some time away from the National Rowing Team to pursue his motivational speaking career and a consulting firm he established with two fellow Olympians called Podium First Consulting.
Chargers Tip-Off Dinner Fundraiser
The Chargers Tip-Off Dinner Fundraiser starts at 5:30pm with beverages sponsored by the Vancouver Island Brewery. Guests will be treated to a buffet dinner, followed by Brian’s presentation and exciting live and silent auctions featuring incredible fishing, rafting and golf getaways, fun family and sports fan activity packages, prizes, raffles and more.
Tickets for the event are $150 per person and include a $75 tax receipt. Corporate tables are available. All funds raised will help support student-athletes in the Chargers men’s and women’s basketball programs.
