Teen girls learn to make musical memory game at Taste of Electronics workshops
8:45am-2:30pm, Thursday, November 4
Interurban campus, Technology Centre, Room 229
Grade 10 girls will spend a day at Interurban campus in a hands-on electronics workshop, Thursday, November 4. Each girl will assemble an electronic musical memory game called Simone Says, and take the finished product home with her at the end of the day.
The one-day workshops are being organized by Camosun’s Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology department. The Taste of Electronics workshop will appeal to girls who are naturally curious and creative, and who have an aptitude for math and sciences.
“Besides having a lot of fun, we want these girls to learn about the career opportunities in the electronics field,” said workshop leader Joyce van de Vegte. “By giving them a chance to learn and use some basic skills, we hope they’ll start to explore electronics as a potential career choice. Our graduates are in high demand for well-paying and interesting jobs, but for some reason, women are still very under-represented.”
During the workshops the girls will be introduced to skills such as soldering, circuit board assembly and microcontroller programming. At a more advanced level, these same skills are used in the development of popular items such as MP3 players, cell phones, digital cameras, renewable energy systems and robotics.
Registration is open to Grade 10 girls on a first-come, first-served basis, and at no cost to the participants. Lunch is included. The workshop can accommodate 30 girls, and a few spots are still available.
