Two exceptional college graduates will receive awards at the Camosun graduation ceremony, November 6. Henry Mark, Practical Nursing 2008 and Nella Nelson, University Transfer 1972, will both be recognized for academic achievement, but it’s their dedication to making the world a better place that makes them truly stand out.
BC Lieutenant Governor’s Silver Medal recipient says it’s time to give back
It’s not everyday you meet a student like Henry Mark, let alone have him as a classmate. Mark’s Practical Nursing instructors describe him as a really smart, mellow sort of guy with a big heart and a drive to help people in need. Whether it’s sharing his knowledge and research findings with classmates, or travelling to Haiti to assist people with severe disability, Mark is always ready to reach out and lend a helping hand. Aboriginal mentor receives 2009 Distinguished Alumni Award
Nella Nelson grew up in a home that valued education, and and so it seems logical that she would become a teacher. But that wasn’t her intention when she first enrolled in Camosun’s University Transfer program.
Growing up in the N’amgis Nation of Alert Bay, Nelson’s goal was to conduct historical research that would benefit her band. Her path changed, though, when she and other parents from a Victoria school started to explore how to weave First Nations content into the curriculum. Nelson became passionate about public education and returned to UVic for her Bachelors of Education degree. Read more...
