900 grade 10 students to attend Marine Industry Career Fair

November 4 & 5, 2009 at CFB Esquimalt

October 30, 2009

A ship’s tour of the Esquimalt Harbour will be one of the highlights for students visiting CFB Esquimalt to learn about careers in the marine industry. Over a two-day period November 4 and 5, about 900 grade 10 students from 19 different schools will visit the base. In addition to the harbour tour, they’ll participate in “try a skill” activities, and talk with several marine industry representatives to find out about career opportunities.

Camosun and DND help Island students explore marine industry careers“We’re organizing this for grade 10 students to support the career planning they’re already doing in school,” says Kelly Knister, coordinator of the South Island Partnership at Camosun College. “The marine industry is a very big player in our Island economy, but not many people know much about it. It’s a local growth industry with more than 70 career areas available. Our region’s economy depends on young people making a decision to gain needed skills for a career within the marine sector.”

The two-day career fair is being organized by the West Coast Shipbuilding and Repair Forum, in co-operation with the South Island Partnership (SIP), which includes Camosun College and the five local school districts of Victoria, Saanich, Sooke, Gulf Islands and Cowichan Valley. SIP received a grant from the Victoria Foundation to support its stay-in-school initiatives, and some of those funds are being used to pay for buses to transport the students to the two-day marine industry career fair.

The marine industry partners include the Department of National Defence, the Canadian Forces, Washington Marine Group, BC Ferries, the Canadian Coast Guard, Victoria Shipyard, International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron ship builders, Blacksmiths, Forgers and Helpers, and the Resource Training Organization.

The career fair runs 9am-3pm each day, with student groups scheduled to spend about two hours on the Base. The event is being hosted by Maritime Forces Pacific CFB Esquimalt in the Naden Drill Shed building 75 Naden.
