Sneak peak at the future of high performance biomechanical assessment at Camosun

Netherlands biomechanics company XSens Technologies B.V. is visiting the Sport Innovation Centre (SPIN) at Camosun College’s Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence, the only Canadian stop on XSens’ North American tour to introduce its new MVN BIOMCH camera-less 3D human motion measurement suit and support technology.
“This is an unprecedented opportunity for students, faculty, athletes and coaches to see the technology in action,” says Dr. Tim Walzak, BC Regional Innovation Chair in Sport Technology at Camosun College. “There will be plenty of time to ask questions and to evaluate the potential uses of the system in high performance athletics as well as for physio/rehabilitation uses.”
EA Sports and Sony Pictures Imageworks have worked with XSens for video game and film production projects. Bringing this new technology into the sport science environment means that high performance athletes will no longer be confined to laboratory spaces for biomechanical assessment. Real-time analysis enables the optimisation of skilled body movements to take place in the field enhancing an athlete’s chance of success.
Staff from SPIN and the Canadian Sport Centre Pacific will be on hand to assist Canadian Olympic and Paralympics athletes and coaches as they assess first-hand the innovative sports science technology, including a live demonstration of the suit by XSens at 10 am.
“After the demonstration, the suit will stay at SPIN for about a week of comprehensive testing,” says Walzak. “We’ll work with CSCP staff and others to take a close look at the applicability of the motion capture system for Paralympic and sport-specific use (cycling, rowing, athletics, strength training, etc. ).
