Camosun College reports out, and invites the public to grade new online Community Report.
Camosun College’s annual community report is now available for the world to see. And grade.
This year, the Community Report was produced as an interactive, online initiative, a first for the college. The online Community Report invites the user to explore the successes and accomplishments of the college over the past year. There’s also opportunities to provide user comment and to rate the stories.
David Sovka, Associate Director, College and Community Relations, agrees there’s a risk to this approach. “There will be some who think that a community college should produce a more traditional, paper-based annual report,” says Sovka. “But we decided to embrace the idea that a social media framework is exactly where community report should go. We want to hear from the community we serve. It’s a bold move for Camosun, but this is the future. We want to get on with it.” Sovka led the project team made up of staff from College and Community Relations, the Camosun Foundation and Information Technology Services.
Moving the Community Report online was also part of Camosun’s overall plan for reducing energy use, and saving paper.
And if any student of social media asks, “What’s with the refrigerator motif?”, Sovka has an answer.
“Everybody I know has a fridge covered with family photos, cartoons, shopping lists, perhaps an affirmation or two – the keepsakes and minutiae of family life,” says Sovka. “A quick glance at a fridge door can tell a lot about the people who live there! Our community report is on a virtual fridge because we want you to find out a lot about us”.
Sovka also has a challenge. "As a fun way to learn more about our community, we're posting a gallery of people's fridges online. We'd love to learn more about you - send us a digital photo of your fridge. We'll post all the fridges online as a kind of 'town hall fridge' meeting.” Send photos to community-report@camosun.bc.ca
