Camosun College’s new Bachelor of Sport and Fitness Leadership degree has been granted Ministry of Advanced Education approval, making it the second degree to be offered by the college’s Centre for Sport and Exercise Education.
The Bachelor of Sport and Fitness Leadership (BSFL) is a four-year degree program that prepares students to lead and manage sport and fitness programs. Graduates will work in fields where they have opportunity to shape public policy on access to, and quality of, sport and fitness programs.
“Our students will be well-prepared to implement Canada’s national agenda for healthy lifestyles through sport and fitness,” says Dr. Peter Rehor, Director of Camosun’s Centre for Sport and Exercise Education. “They will be able to significantly contribute to a ‘sport for all’ system in Canada.”
The innovative BSFL degree will provide students with an understanding of the Canadian sport system and culture, and will enhance graduates’ access to a wide range of employment and participation opportunities. The escalating demand for quality leaders in sport and fitness will be addressed by a comprehensive curriculum, which includes program development and facility management, socio-cultural aspects of sport and society, human resource management, marketing and sport consumerism, financial management, communication, and public relations. It will also provide the marketing and research skills that are necessary to address the ever-changing demands of society.
“The BSFL degree complements our existing diploma offerings,” says Dr. Andy Van Neutegem, Chair of Sport Education at Camosun College. “It allows students to graduate into the work force at the two-year mark, or carry on into the third year to earn a degree. It’s a flexible, student- and career-friendly pathway.”
The BSFL complements the college’s other Centre for Sport and Exercise Education degree, the CATA-accredited Bachelor of Athletic & Exercise Therapy degree, a four-year degree program which teaches the prevention, immediate care, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal orthopedic injuries and variety of hypokinetic diseases.
