Camosun College, in partnership with the Marine Institute and a host of players in the local ocean sector, is hosting the annual Ocean Innovation conference, October 20-22 at the Victoria Conference Centre. The Ocean Innovation conference is an international forum to introduce the latest innovations in the areas of sustainable ocean management and maritime safety.
The conference is organized as a two-day, single stream event with a parallel exhibition area that ensures a variety of provocative issues will be discussed and debated by all participants. A concerted effort is being made to involve all members of the community, including government, academia, industry and NGOs in the belief that all have key roles to play and that it is important to provide a gathering place in order to discuss and debate timely issues.
"We want to make sure that there is a robust cross-fertilization of ideas," says Dr. Tom Roemer, Dean of Trades and Technology at Camosun. "Our 'secret sauce' is to minimize the tendency found in technical conferences to cluster into 'intellectual ghettos'."
The annual conference is usually held on Canada’s east coast. Last year Victoria’s Camosun College and the Marine Institute at Memorial University, St. John’s, Newfoundland, exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding to develop new joint initiatives with respect to ocean technology and marine training, including holding the annual conference on Canada’s west coast every second year.
"As Canada's colleges and technical institutes have taken on the roles of applied research and technology transfer hubs, it is necessary for us to forge strategic alliances,” says Roemer. "With respect to ocean technology, we could not have hoped for a more suitable partner than the Marine Institute. This collaboration is indeed ‘from sea to sea'."
The Ocean Innovation conference consistently attracts between 200-250 delegates and 20-30 industry exhibitors.
