Technology summer camp for teens includes a tour of DND
9am-3pm, Monday, July 13 through Friday, July 17 at Interurban campus
High school students will make iPod amplifiers, building UberStix bridges, programming Lego Mind Storm robots, and design and launch bottle rockets during Camosun’s third annual technology summer camp, July 13-17, 2009.
DiscoverTech@Camosun will be a fun and action-packed week for 16 young people as they learn what engineering technology is, and how it can lead to a wide choice of high-tech careers.
After four days of hands-on learning, the campers will hop on a bus and head for the Department of National Defence for a morning tour of DND’s facilities.
“It’s great to have DND as a partner again,” says April Atkins, promotions assistant for Camosun’s School of Trades and Technology. “DND is a significant employer in our region and hires a lot of our technology graduates. This guided tour will be a great experience for our campers – their facilities are not something many people get a chance to see.”
The students will be involved in activities within four different technology fields:
- Monday - Civil Engineering Technology
9am-noon – mix and cast concrete cylinders (crush them on Friday!)
12:30-3pm – build a two-metre bridge using UberStix - Tuesday - Electronics Engineering Technology
9am-noon – solder and construct an iPod amplifier
12:30-3pm – test the iPod amp / electronics showcase - Wednesday - Mechanical Engineering Technology
9am-noon – practice computer-aided-design
12:30-3pm – laser manufacturing / construct and launch a bottle rocket - Thursday - Computer Systems Technology
9am-noon – program a Lego Mind Storm Robot
12:30-3pm – continue software development - Friday – Putting it All Together
8:15 – bus takes campers to DND for guided tour and hosted lunch
2-3pm - bottle rocket competitions, project showcase and student recognition
DiscoverTech@Camosun is for students in grades 9 through 12. This popular week-long camp is offered in July each year, and Camosun is hoping to add a spring camp next year during the March Spring Break.
