Adrian Walraven to speak during International Development Week
Wednesday, February 4, 6:30 to 8pm
January 27, 2009
CIDA representative and international development expert Adrian Walraven comes to Camosun College Wednesday, February 4 to present perspectives on the reconstruction of Afghanistan. The visit culminates Camosun’s activities supporting International Development Week (IDW), an annual CIDA initiative. This year’s IDW theme is Development for Results.
“We are very excited that Mr. Walraven accepted our invitation to participate in International Development Week at Camosun College,” says Camosun International’s Dr. Jim Paulson. “This provides a rare chance for local citizens to gain first-hand insights into Canada’s roles and activities in Afghanistan.”
Working for CIDA as manager of the Kandahar Operations Unit, Walraven’s duties focus on Canadian and Afghan priorities, including security, humanitarian aid, democratic process and Afghan-led political reconciliation efforts for a sustainable peace. He served a 12-month term as a CIDA representative with the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team in 2006/07 and returns to Afghanistan regularly to assist in the coordination and delivery of CIDA programs.
Walraven holds a BA in International Studies (UNBC) and an MA in International Development Studies (U of Guelph). His extensive experience includes the United Nations Development Programs in Ukraine, Belarus, Krygyzstan and Uzbekistan. He also served as an elections observer in Ukraine (2004) and Haiti (2006).
