Integrated Business Case project winners. The best tourism business plan won.

Nine business teams vied for ‘best of class’ at the Liz Ashton Campus Centre lecture centre Friday, December 11, as the Integrated Business Case (IBC) project wrapped up the semester with a student showcase.

After a lot of teamwork and spirited, inventive presentations, the Chef's Day Off team won both the Showcase and Schwarzie (crowd favourite) awards.

The IBC is a key component of the School of Business’ first-year curriculum. First-year business students form teams early in the school year and develop a business idea as part of all five of their first-semester courses. No other business school offers IBC in the first year.

This year all nine of the student teams presented tourism business plans.

Alyssa Hansen, Stephanie Hayes, Jonathan Lee, Garrett Marcellus and Jake Martin made up the Chef’s Day Off team. Jonathan Lee’s real life experience as a chef at Brassiere l’ecole fed the team’s inspiration and approach. Lee graduated from the Camosun Chef Apprenticeship program a decade ago, and worked as a chef until a recent motorcycle accident. He is now reinventing himself taking business courses at Camosun.

“IBC is learning-in-action,” says Karen Stephens, IBC program leader. “Each team creates a business idea—fun, creative, serious, whatever the team agrees on and then, applying the key business concepts and skills learned from first-semester courses—the idea is fleshed out as a viable business plan.”
