Camosun student team raises $1730 to fight global poverty

A business student team from Camosun’s Office Administration program raised the most money for this year’s Victoria World Partnership Walk, to win the University/College Challenge. This was the first year Camosun College entered a team.
Fatma Sayani, now in the Public Administration program, led the Camosun team as a Capstone project. "Capstone projects allow students, working in teams, to integrate the knowledge and skills gained throughout their program," says Ian Humphries, Associate Dean of the School of Business."The students conceive, plan and execute an event – in this case, to fundraise for the May 31, 2009 Victoria World Partnership Walk."
The Camosun team raised $1730, all of which goes toward fighting global poverty, as part of the Aga Khan Foundation Canada.
On December 3, Naz Rayani, organizer of the Victoria World Partnership Walk, pharmacist and community leader, came to the college to present recognition certificates to the business student team, and thanked Ian Humphries, Associate Dean, the School of Business and Camosun College for their roles in student leadership.
"Half of the world’s population lives on less than $2 a day," says Rayani. "The hole is huge, but we have to do what we can. Community participation in events such as the World Partnership Walk provide hope and funds toward ending global poverty."
"As a student, making a difference to help build awareness of global poverty is a major initiative " says Sayani. "Our Camosun team made that difference, by raising funds through the Walk, that in turn go to support programs established by the Aga Khan Foundation Canada."
Aga Khan Foundation Canada is a non-profit and non-denominational development agency, founded in 1980, that promotes sustainable and equitable social development without regard for ethnicity, religion or political affiliation.
