Business Simulation winners. The 2009 High School Business Simulation Competition held April 3, 2009, at Camosun College saw 16 teams participating from eight Victoria high schools. Camosun’s School of Business coordinated the competition.

The participating schools were Belmont High (2 teams), Claremont Secondary (2 teams), Lambrick Park Secondary (2 teams), Mount Douglas (3 teams), Oak Bay High (4 teams), Parkland Secondary, Spectrum, and Victoria High School.

The teams completed six rounds of the “Marketplace” computer simulation, an internet- based team competition program. The simulation program has been used in 35 countries by hundreds of students in high school, college, and even MBA programs. The simulation takes the students through six rounds, or “quarters” of running a corporation. At the end of each quarter, the students view their results and decide how to proceed for the next round.

Business Simulation competitors.Nine Camosun business students volunteered to mentor the teams for the first three rounds of the competition. This gave the high school students an opportunity to ask questions, gain strategic advice, plus build rapport with Camosun students. In the afternoon, the mentors stepped back to let the teams complete the last three rounds on their own.

All team members, student mentors, and high school teachers enjoyed a lunch prepared by Camosun College’s culinary arts students at the Helmut Huber Cook Training Centre.

At an awards presentation at the end of the afternoon, the four members of the winning team each received a $500 tuition credit for Camosun College.

The winning team was from Parkland Secondary, taught by Mr. Roger Pires. In second place, was the team from Spectrum taught by Mr. Chuck Groot. The biggest turn around was by the team from Belmont High, taught by Ms. Sarah Leswal.

Business Simulation competitors. The members of the second place team were awarded $25 Visa gift cards and the members of the Best Turnaround team received $25 ITunes cards.
