In January 2008, Camosun College offered Victoria’s first-ever computer class specifically for adults who are Deaf. The college is pleased to offer a follow-up class—Word 2003-Level 1 for Deaf Adults this fall. The part-time evening course which starts October 29 will be taught in American Sign Language (ASL).

Jenny Laing is an outreach worker for Island Deaf & Hard of Hearing Centre (IDHHC) in Victoria. “The first class in January was fully subscribed by 16 participants,” says Laing. “The fact that the class is taught in ASL, rather than through an interpreter meant true access for those learners.”

The innovative continuing education program developed by Camosun College this year continues a partnership between Camosun College’s School of Business, Jericho Hill Legacy Trust and Island Deaf & Hard of Hearing Centre. The class will be taught by Wendy Dobbie, an instructor from the Deaf Community. Any Deaf adult taking Word 2003 – Level 1 for Deaf Adults can be funded through the Jericho Hill Legacy Trust.

September 22-26 is International Deaf Awareness Week.
