"Taste of Electronics" huge success

Workshops introduced teen girls to potential career paths

Camosun invited Grade 10 girls to spend a day at Interurban campus for a hands-on electronics workshop. Each girl assembled an electronic musical memory game called Simone Says, and took the finished product home with them at the end of the day.

The one-day workshops were organized by Camosun’s Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology department, in an effort to attract young women to the field of electronics.

"The number of female students in our program continues to be dismally low, despite the fantastic career opportunities for both men and women," said workshop leader Joyce van de Vegte. "Our graduates are in high demand for well-paying and interesting jobs. I wish we could see more young women getting into electronics. It’s such a rewarding career."

During the workshops the girls were introduced to skills such as soldering and microcontroller programming. They got a brief introduction to Camosun’s electronics engineering program, which requires an interest in and aptitude for math and sciences.
