Head of the Stanford University Prison Experiment to speak

7:30-9pm, Thursday, November 20, 2008

November 7, 2008

The Psychology department at Camosun has invited internationally renowned psychologist, researcher and author, Dr. Philip Zimbardo, to spend an afternoon with students and faculty, and to make an evening presentation that is open to the public.

Dr. Philip Zimbardo is best known for his ground-breaking research in 1971, now known as the Stanford University Prison Experiment. University students were asked to role-play as prisoners and prison guards, but the experiment was forced to stop after only six days when the role-play got out of hand. In his best-selling book, “The Lucifer Effect: Understanding How Good People Turn Evil," Zimbardo explains the psychology behind this phenomenon and compares it with the abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib in Iraq.

Other research involved the psychological development of cults, in which Zimbardo worked with members of Jim Jones' Peoples Temple cult who had escaped the suicide/ massacre in the Guyana jungle in 1978.

Zimbardo's current research is on the psychology of time perspective, focusing on the ways individuals perceive time zones of past, present, and future, and beliefs about life after death.

Zimbardo will discuss his newest book, “The Time Paradox,” during his evening presentation.
