Camosun’s Early Childhood Care and Education program is breaking down barriers and going online to make it easier for you to enrich the lives of the young children in your life.

Little girl washing her hands.Health, Safety and Nutrition Level 1, also known as ECCE 150, is a cornerstone of early childhood care, teaching students much more than how to make simple snacks! Based on the most current information available, this interactive course focuses on important life skills to keep young children (ages birth through twelve) healthy and safe at home and in community settings.

“A safe and nurturing environment is the foundation to all early childhood settings.” explains Linda Leone, program leader of Camosun’s Early Childhood Care and Education program. “This course will teach essential skills to boost your knowledge and confidence to ensure children’s well-being.”

Online courses are a flexible and accessible choice, especially for those who have busy schedules or live outside greater Victoria. By studying online, you will start to build your professional network, connecting with classmates from all over BC.

  • Learn the latest information about health, safety and nutrition for young children
  • Gain the qualification to work as an ECCE assistant in a licenced facility
  • Earn two academic credits towards the ECCE certificate/diploma

What you’ll learn

Using tried and true online teaching techniques, you will learn how to assess the health, nutritional and safety needs of children, from birth to age 12. This information will provide the basis for planning and maintaining a healthy, safe environment.

As you work through the 14-week program, you will explore how personal attitudes and cultural variations contribute to health, safety and nutrition.

Career enhancement and academic credit

Students who successfully complete ECCE 150 will be eligible to work as an assistant in many community settings like afterschool care centres, licenced early childhood education centres and community recreation centres. In addition to enhancing your career options in this exciting and rewarding field, you will earn two academic credits towards your Camosun ECCE diploma.

Professional development

ECCE 150 is an affordable and flexible professional development option for people working in early childhood education centres and other community support settings. Starting January 7, 2009, you can study in the comfort of your own home, at a time that fits your busy schedule.

Personal development

In today’s hectic world many of us missed the fundamentals of family-based health, safety and nutrition. The skills and tips you’ll learn in ECCE 150 can enhance your personal family life, and increase your confidence as a parent or primary caregiver.

Affordable

Total cost of the program is only $240, including tuition and student fees. Currently enrolled Camosun College students will only need to pay the tuition portion, making the course even more affordable.
