The first Get a Grip energy saving idea competition has been won by Chad Nogler, a student in Arts & Science at the Lansdowne campus.

His idea to conserve energy by changing the showerheads in the men’s & women’s washrooms on campus was a great one and the Energy Team were thrilled to award him the $50 MEC certificate.

Some of the great ideas from the first month of the competition included:

  • Connecting lights to motion sensors – we have several already but more will be installed when the energy savings work begins at Interurban next year.
  • Wash hands in cold water
  • Turn off computer monitors in classrooms when not in use
  • Turn off lights when you’re the last one leaving the room
  • Use reusable cutlery and recycle paper/glass/metal waste
  • Take the bus or ride your bike to school
  • Print double-sided whenever possible
  • Keep windows & doors closed
  • Bring a water bottle, refill it and reduce plastic

With Chad’s suggestion, our Physical Resources team are now looking into switching to ultra low flow showerheads which can offer as much as 30% water (energy) savings from the industry standard showerheads.

Congratulations Chad! Keep those ideas coming—competition closes December 31/08
