Camosun Foundation celebrates a $4 million fundraising year

The Camosun College Foundation celebrated its many donors and a banner 2007/08 fundraising year at its Annual Donor Recognition Reception at the new Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence, Interurban Campus, Thursday, November 20.
Founded in 1981, the Camosun College Foundation exists to support the College and its students. Close to 1,100 students directly benefit each year from the generosity of more than 4,000 Camosun donors.
“We usually generate over $1.5 million a year to support student financial aid programs, enhance learning environments and enable important capital projects,” said Susan Haddon, executive director of the Camosun College Foundation. “This past year, with the help of our long-time and new donors, we raised an unprecedented $4 million in revenue and provided financial assistance to more students than any other time in our 27-year history.”
The Foundation currently manages over 550 award, bursary and trust funds. About 15 per cent of Camosun students benefit from the College’s annual bursary and award program – but more than 50 per cent of students apply for some kind of financial assistance.
“I know that without the support from the Camosun College Foundation and the generous donors, many students, such as myself, might be unable to pursue their educational goals,” said university transfer student and award and bursary recipient Laura Bulk. “I, for one, greatly appreciate the gracious financial assistance that I have received from Camosun’s many donors.”
In addition to raising monies for student financial assistance, the Camosun Foundation focused on several major projects this past year, including the capital campaign for the new $27.75 million Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence. The Foundation worked in close partnership with the Canadian Sport Centre Pacific and PacificSport Victoria to help raise the funds to complete Phase 1 of the international-level sport education facility. The Province of BC, Western Economic Diversification Canada, Hbc, Thrifty Foods, Coast Capital Savings and many generous individuals and local businesses were among those who contributed to the Institute.
“This coming February, the Foundation will focus on a campaign to support one of the major projects in the College’s Vision 2020 campus plan – a transformation of the Lansdowne and Interurban campus Libraries into next generation learning libraries,” added Haddon.
The project involves renovating Camosun’s existing libraries and transforming them into the academic and social centres of the College. Camosun’s new “next generation” libraries will be places of technological advancement and collaborative learning. Students will have access to all the necessary tools to study and learn in one place including: new computer workstations, laptops for loan, listening and viewing stations, media creation stations, wireless connections, lounge seating, group study rooms, presentation and seminar rooms, commons café, writing centre, teaching and learning centre for faculty, increased holdings of new hard copy and online books, journals, magazines, research resources and more.
“We’re very excited about our new Library campaign and we hope our donors will be as well,” she added. “In the meantime, we wish to thank all of our donors for their continued inspiration, commitment and support over the years, and we are so happy they can share in the achievements of Camosun College and its students.”
