Mark Dangerfield tops at Skills Canada BC

Representing Camosun, carpentry apprentice Mark Dangerfield was awarded the gold medal at the Skills Canada BC provincial competition held in Abbotsford, April 16, 2008.
Dangerfield was judged to be the best out of eight apprentices from BC post-secondary institutions. In a six-hour competition, each contestant had to build a greenhouse, working from supplied blueprints. Dangerfield completed his project in only four and a half hours.
“What makes this really impressive is that Mark is only a second-year apprentice,” explains Al van Akker, carpentry instructor at Camosun. “We usually send more experienced fourth year apprentices to this competition, but after working with Mark in class, I knew he had the skills and talent to be a serious contender.”
Dangerfield grew up in Victoria, and attended Reynolds Secondary. He discovered a love for carpentry and enjoys the variety of challenges plus the satisfaction of looking back at a finished project.
"We're glad to have Mark," says Geoff Higgs, managing director of Addstyle Designer Homes Ltd, the company that employs Dangerfield. "Our employees learn everything about building a house - from the formwork to the finishing carpentry - so they are exposed to a wide spectrum of skills. Mark has been with us for a couple of years now and it's always a bonus to have guys on the crew who enjoy what they do."
Camosun provides all four levels of technical training required for a carpentry apprentice to qualify for the Red Seal Interprovincial certification as a Journeyman Carpenter. “If this is what Mark can do this early in his career,” says van Akker, “I really look forward to seeing him again when he comes back to Camosun for the more advanced levels of training.”
