March 4, 2008 Camosun College Chargers

Despite going for the gold, the Camosun College Chargers had to settle for silver (women) and bronze (men) this past weekend at the British Columbia Colleges' Athletic Association (BCCAA) Provincial Basketball Championships hosted by the University of Northern BC in Prince George.

Although the hardware is a welcome addition to the teams' list of accomplishments being the first-ever BCCAA medal of any kind for the women and the second for the men who won silver in 2005-06, the medals are the last of the season for the Chargers as hopes for a wild card berth to Nationals were crushed earlier this morning.

"We unfortunately didn't get the wild card. They went to St.Foye (Quebec) and Medicine Hat (Alberta)," reported Recreation and Athletics Coordinator Graham Matthews. "Still, the team had a great year and the future looks even better!"

The third-seeded Camosun men's team began the Championships with a solid quarter-final game win against the sixth seeded Capilano Blues on Thursday, February 28. The Chargers came out flying and didn't let up, finishing the first half with a 27 point advantage. Camosun ended the game 39 points ahead of the Blues, 97-58. Third-year forward Jeff Krawetz put up a big 25 points and 10 rebounds and was named Player of the Game.

On Friday, the Chargers met the second-ranked University of BC - Okanagan Lakers in a disappointing 75-55 loss for Camosun, slaying their chances at the gold. "We were never in it," remarked Chargers head coach Gord Thatcher. "We shot poorly and were either hesitant or over anxious. But you have to give UBC-O credit, they played well and were the better team today." Second-year guard Max Bell was named Camosun's Player of the Game for his 21-point contribution.

The Chargers made up for the loss in the bronze medal match-up on Saturday night where they cruised to an 18 point lead at the half and beat the fifth-ranked Columbia Bible College Bearcats 95-81. "I'm very happy we won, but sad at the same time for the guys as this was our last game," commented Thatcher. "It's hard to play the bronze medal game when you've come here to play for gold, but the guys showed up and worked hard." Working very hard was second-year guard Jeff Spoor who scored 25 points and nine assists to earn Player of the Game.

Going into the Championships as the number one seed, the Chargers women earned a bye straight to the semi-final round on Friday, where they met the fourth seeded Malaspina Mariners. The Chargers led the game by 11 points at the half and ended it 74-62. Third-year post Ashley Mackay, earned Player of the Game for scoring a whopping 33 points.

The semi-final win over Malaspina shot the Chargers straight into the Gold medal game on Saturday where they faced the second-seeded hosts, the UNBC Timberwolves. Anticipating a tough match-up with UNBC, Chargers head coach Brett Westcott stated, "We played well in the second and third quarters tonight, but we'll have to play a complete game tomorrow night to win gold in UNBC's home gym."

Within the first five minutes of the game, Camosun was up 13-4. Second-year Kendall Allen and first-year forward Carmen Lapthorne added to the scoreboard with their long-distance three-pointers, giving Camosun a two-point lead (39-37) at the half. In the third quarter, the home team outscored the Chargers 22-4 to take charge of the game. UNBC secured the gold medal in front of a capacity crowd with a final score of 71-54. Player of the Game for Camosun was second-year guard, Kate Carlson.

"I thought we were ready coming out to start the third quarter, but we couldn't score with the number of times we turned the ball over" commented Westcott.

Three Chargers were named to the esteemed BCCAA Provincial Tournament All-Star Team, those included Women's Team All-Stars, Ashley MacKay and Kate Carlson and Men's Team All-Star, Jeff Spoor.
