Camosun recognized the achievements of 73 students at its annual awards ceremony for the School of Trades and Technology, Friday evening, May 30 at 7pm.
Highlighting the event was the Trades Competitor’s Award, presented to the two Camosun apprenticeship students who recently won national competitions within their fields. Casey Wilson won the national sheet metal competition held in Niagara Falls July 19 and 20, 2007 and Brooke Winters won the gold medal at the national Knorr/CCFCC Junior Culinary Challenge held April 25 in Montreal.

“Camosun is extremely proud to see not one, but two of our apprentices achieve national honours,” said Dr. Tom Roemer, Dean of Trades and Technology. “It’s a tribute to the excellent programs and top-notch teachers that Camosun is so well known for. Our students are extremely well-prepared for success in the real world.”
Altogether, students received $32,675, thanks largely to donations from local industry and businesses. “The Victoria business community is very generous,” explained Jo-Anne Silverman, senior development officer with the Camosun College Foundation. “They understand how important post-secondary education is to economic growth in our region, and the need to support young people as they gain the specialized skills required by local industry.”
Another highlight award was the Technology Award of Excellence, presented to Allen Wallace, who is graduating from the Computer Systems Technology program. This award recognizes demonstrated academic excellence and accomplishments outside of class that exemplify Camosun College's commitment to excellence in learning.
Camosun specializes in career training, and is the community leader for programs in the trades and technology fields. Graduates are in high demand as the need for skilled employees continues to grow in the south Vancouver Island region.
