A Prescription for Success

After working in the hospitality industry for over a decade, Pasqua Terrone wanted a change of scenery.
“I held positions around the world which I loved, and I was good at my job,” said Pasqua. “But I was ready for a change.”
“One of the strengths gained by working in the hospitality industry is the ability to adapt well to change,” she notes, and adds, “We’re not fazed by much, and I knew I’d bring that quality to a new career!”
Pasqua chose to return-to-learning for retraining by enrolling in Camosun’s Medical Office Assistant program in the fall of 2006.
Health care’s demand for well-trained professionals continues to outpace most other sectors. Camosun’s 8-month full-time certificate program prepares students to perform administrative and clinical duties in a range of health care settings. Pasqua found employment in a specialist office as soon as she graduated. Shortly afterward, Pasqua was offered a position with VIHA that she couldn’t resist.
“I now work with VIHA, as a Medical Office Assistant with the Integrated Health Network. We work in conjunction with the Ministry of Health, on a project, aimed at health maintenance and prevention,” explains Pasqua. “I love it.”
The decision to go back to school and retrain was the right one.
“The duration of the MOA program is eight-months, so financially it was affordable,” notes Pasqua. “ The program enhanced and upgraded skills I already possessed, making the transition into the medical field effortless. I find that since I’ve taken the program it has opened the door to endless possibilities. Most importantly, I feel great about what I do. It’s really rewarding being able to assist in patients’ health, recovery and prevention.”When asked for words of wisdom for this year’s students, whether in the Medical Office Assistant program, or any of the other four Applied Business Technology (ABT) programs, Pasqua doesn’t hesitate.
“I would have to say that it is never too late to learn something new and change the contribution you make in life.”

Camosun participates with other BC postsecondary institutions in a follow-up survey of recent students. Respondents are asked about their college experience and post-program activities.
Medical Office Assistant Results
- 85% are employed
- 15% are taking further studies
- Median hourly wage $16
- 94% are employed in a training related job
- 81% are employed full-time
- 80% are very satisfied with the education they received.
