Introducing teenagers to technology careers
9am-3pm, Monday, July 21 through Friday, July 25 at Interurban campus

High school students will be hurling objects, making amplifiers for their iPODs and MP3 players, building earthquake-resistant towers and programming computers during Camosun’s second annual technology summer camp, July 21-25, 2008.
DiscoverTech@Camosun will be a fun and action-packed week for 17 young people as they learn how math, physics, electronics and computer programming can lead to a wide choice of high-tech careers.
Because of the huge demand for skilled technologists and technicians, this year’s technology camp is being sponsored by the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC (ASTTBC) and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC.)
“This year’s camp will include some new features,” said April Atkins, Enrolment and Promotions Assistant for Camosun’s School of Trades and Technology. “ASTTBC and NSERC both stepped forward with extra funding, allowing us to purchase new software and equipment and to hire a bus to take the kids on a guided industry tour.”
The week’s activities cover four different technology fields:
- Monday Civil Engineering – using a professional architectural kit which students build a skyscraper from real blueprints
- Tuesday Electronics Engineering – assemble an amp to hook up to your IPods/MP3 player, microphone, speakers and an electric guitar.
- Wednesday Mechanical Engineering – design and build a spring action catapult to see who can hurl objects the farthest
- Thursday Computer Systems – working with Scratch@MIT and design game building by creating their own interactive stories, animations, games, games and/or art.
Winding up the week on Friday morning, students will gain a real-world career perspective by touring two local businesses that hire skilled technologists and technicians: Dockside Green and Reliable Controls. Lunch will be served back on campus, followed by project demonstrations and an awards ceremony.
