Chargers women ascend to first time, first place hoops standing

The Camosun College Chargers women’s basketball team made history this weekend by earning the program’s first ever number one spot in the British Columbia Colleges’ Athletics Association (BCCAA) league standings.
The Chargers moved up one spot from second with a solid 98-62 win last Friday against the Columbia Bible College (CBC) Bearcats who are ranked ninth.
Head coach Brett Westcott is taking it all in stride. "First place right now is one step toward a bigger goal at the end of the season. First place in January does not mean much if you are not there at the end of February. We have a tough stretch in our schedule right now as we are on the road for three weekends in a row. If we can survive these three weeks, then we have two more big weeks against the top teams in our league," stated Westcott.
With a win-loss record of 7-1, the Chargers are two points ahead of the BCCAA’s number two team and Island rivals, the Malaspina Mariners (6-2).
Matched up against the Mariners this Friday in Nanaimo, the Chargers will need to put up a big defense to force a wider point spread between the two rival teams. “If we hope to beat Malaspina in their gym, we will have to defend better than we have recently, especially in the post. Malaspina is a big and experienced squad and was the best team in our league the last two weeks prior to the Christmas exam break. Hopefully we can put together a good effort at both ends of the court and get out of Nanaimo with a win,” said Westcott.
The Chargers men are holding a steady third place standing with a record of 5 wins and 3 losses; four points behind second-ranked University of British Columbia – Okanagan Lakers and six points behind first-place team, the Douglas College Royals.
The Chargers 97-93 win against the sixth place CBC Bearcats this past weekend was no ordinary game, marking head coach Gord Thatcher’s 100th career win with the Chargers.
With little time to celebrate, Thatcher is focused on facing off with Malaspina on Friday. “It should be a great atmosphere up at Mal. The Mal-Cam State match-up has become a great rivalry and I think it's good for basketball on the Island. We're very familiar with one another, so Friday will come down to who executes on the offensive end, who really digs in on the defensive end, and who makes the least mistakes. I believe Mal is the best defensive team in our league; they're really well-coached and they have class kids who play very hard. The winner of this game has the leg up for a Top Three finish in the league," reported Thatcher.
The Malaspina University College Mariners host the Camosun College Chargers on Friday, January 18 in Nanaimo: Women 6:00pm; Men 8:00pm.
