Full classroom for innovative continuing education program

February 20, 2008

Twelve students are participating in Victoria's first-ever computer class for Deaf adults. Computer class for Deaf adults.

Computers – Level 1 for Deaf Adults is a hands-on, practical course that helps participants gain confidence with computers. They learn how to manage files and folders, organize email, deal with attachments, use popular websites for communication, and create useful documents in Word. The course also teaches participants how to set up a video phone and use its many features.

The innovative program is a partnership between Camosun’s School of Business, Jericho Hill Legacy Trust and Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre. The class is taught by Wendy Dobbie.

The Deaf community’s 'first language' is American Sign Language (ASL), and the fact that the part-time evening course is taught in ASL rather than through an interpreter means true access for the Deaf community. As well, any Deaf adult taking Computers – Level 1 for Deaf Adults could access funding for the course through the Jericho Hill Legacy Trust.
