Chargers basketball teams in pursuit of provincial prize

With less than a week to go before they board the bus, the Camosun College Chargers basketball teams will be hard at work this week preparing for the British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association (BCCAA) Provincial Championships hosted by the University of Northern BC in Prince George, February 28 – March 1.
Both teams have a great shot at bringing home some hardware – as well as qualifying for the Canadian Colleges’ Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championships.
The Chargers women have had their best season ever this year. Not only did they earn the program’s first-ever number one ranking in the BCCAA, but they successfully hung on to the coveted spot for the past six weeks.
With 13 wins and 3 losses, the team enters the playoffs as the number one seed – another first for the program since its inception in 1993-94. Since that time, the Chargers have only made three previous trips to Provincials: 1995-96, 2000-01 and 2006-07 where the team placed just outside the medals at fourth, their best finish to date.
This year, the Chargers will be aiming much higher with their sights set on the Provincial title and a shot at Nationals. Despite an awesome season and an 81-40 thumping win over the Columbia Bible College Bearcats last Saturday, head coach Brett Westcott is as pragmatic as ever. “We’re a first place team and we still haven’t played a full 40 minutes. We’ll need to play our best to win at provincials,” he said.
On the men’s side, last Saturday’s game against the Bearcats raised a few eyebrows at the end of the half where the third ranked Chargers found themselves only two points ahead of the fifth ranked Bearcats. The Chargers came through in the second half to finish the game 91-58, much to the relief of head coach Gord Thatcher and a home crowd of 300 who gathered to bid farewell to the recently resigned coach.
"We let them get back into it in the second quarter but really came out focused to take over in the second half. It’s been an up and down year but this team has made a big jump in these last few weekends,” commented Thatcher.
Heading into the playoffs with 11 wins and 5 losses, the third seeded Chargers men face the sixth seeded Capilano College Blues on Thursday, February 28 at 3:00pm.
"I'm very proud of the way our guys have pulled together over the last month. We have overcome a lot and are now playing our best ball. We have an extremely tough quarterfinal game with Capilano. I believe that they are the best coached team in our league and very dangerous. Their record is not indicative of their performance, as they have had the closest losses out of anyone in our league. Their kids are talented, play hard, and carry themselves with a lot of class,” said Thatcher.
The first seeded Camosun Chargers women will play either Malaspina (#4) or Capilano (#5) on Friday, February 29 at 6:30pm.
