What goes a ‘round’, comes around. It was a winning round of golf when Camosun’s Golf Management students took to Olympic View golf course last week and raised more than a thousand dollars for student financial assistance.
The students raised $1,101.40 in proceeds for the Camosun College Foundation Professional Golf Management (PGM) Bursary through the generosity of event sponsorship at their November 21 golf tournament at Olympic View. The bursary is awarded annually to a student in Camosun’s golf program.
“The second-year students secure sponsorships as part of their Tournament and Event Management class,” says Troy Dunning, Camosun’s golf program leader. “It’s one way we connect the career to the classroom.”
The Camosun PGM Bursary Golf Tournament is an annual event. Alanna Deegan is the Tournament and Event Management course instructor. “This amount has only been surpassed once; and that was in the first year of the tournament when 70 students worked on the event,” said Deegan. “This year, 23 students pulled off a fantastic golf championship by raising more than a thousand dollars to help their fellow students.”
Thomas McBride is a second-year Golf Management student and notes that more than 25 sponsors and prize donors helped make the golf tournament a win-win. “It definitely was a team effort,” says McBride. ”I’m glad our motivation throughout the term paid off as well as it did toward bursary funding.”
The Olympic View Golf Club hosted the Camosun College PGM Bursary Golf Tournament for the third year in a row.
Camosun College’s two-year Diploma in Golf Management program emphasizes management and marketing, and is the only program in British Columbia fully accredited and endorsed by the Canadian Professional Golfers' Association (CPGA).
