A team of students from Camosun College’s School of Business took second place in a province-wide stock market competition this spring. The BC Portfolio Management Challenge Competition gave teams from seven college and seven universities or university-colleges the opportunity to test finance and accounting skills while managing one million dollars in hypothetical capital.

The Camosun team of 20 students, led by Finance/Accounting instructor Mahesh Kumar, built a portfolio that resulted in a second place win. The investment management firm of Odlum Brown sponsored the Challenge, audited the results, and will formally recognize the Camosun team at a wrap-up event at the College on April 25. Cash awards will be presented to top team performers.

“Congratulations to Camosun College for placing second in this year’s BC Portfolio Management Challenge,” says Brooke Campbell, VP Corporate Finance, Odlum Brown, Vancouver. “Learning about the stock market is becoming increasingly important as more and more individuals are forced to take personal responsibility for generating their own retirement income.”

“I was very pleased with the level of participation, and the students performed exceptionally well,” says instructor and team leader, Mahesh Kumar. ”This was an excellent opportunity to test classroom knowledge against real-world situations. Twenty students made up the Camosun Portfolio Management Challenge team. “While the money was hypothetical, the students worked with real data and with real companies,” notes Kumar. “We look forward to winning next year!”

First place in the BC Portfolio Management Challenge Competition was taken by the College of New Caledonia. Royal Roads University, also led by Mahesh Kumar placed third.

The BC Portfolio Management Challenge Competition team from Camosun College included Jennifer Blower, Nathan Cartwright, Lorraine Chapman, Marc Doucette, Chris Duncan, Lloyd Gerry, Kate Hanson, Clayton Hiltz, Heather Lane, Douglas Lawson, Sarah Levson, Matt Lymburner, Jill Morrison, Ryan Ogilvie, Julia Phillips, Mathieu Poirier, Nick Piluso, Joe Sass, Adam Valois and Nicholas Warrington.
