This year Vancouver Island has seen a tremendous increase in demand for Home Support/Resident Care Attendants. It’s a trend happening across the 
province, where there are not enough skilled workers in the sector to meet the demand of an aging population.

To help address the shortage, Camosun College is offering four extra classes in its Home Support/Resident Care Attendant program, increasing the number of annual student graduates into the workplace from 64 to 167.
Traditionally, the full-time program is offered over 24 weeks, beginning in September and again in January. The four new classes will be offered in both part-time and full time sessions.
“Our students get jobs immediately upon finishing the program – and sometimes before!” says Sharon Dixon, Chair of the Continuing Care Department. “Typically graduates make between $18-20/hour to start.”
This year’s classes will run as follows:
October 15, 2007 – June 20, 2008 – Part-Time
(Monday, Wednesday & Friday 3:30 pm - 9:00 pm)
January 7, 2008 – June 20, 2008 – Full Time
(Monday – Friday 9:00 am – 3:00 pm)
January 10, 2008 – June 23, 2008 – Full Time
(Thursday – Monday 3:30 – 9:00 pm)
April 22, 2008 – December 22, 2008 – Part-Time
(Tuesday & Thursday 3:30 – 9:00 pm, Sunday 8:30 am – 2:30 pm)
May 5, 2008 – October 10, 2008 – Full Time
(Monday – Friday 9:00 am – 3:00 pm)

Camosun’s Home Support/Resident Care Attendant (HS/RCA) program prepares students to be frontline care providers in long term care facilities as well as community settings. Through the program’s curriculum and clinical placements, students acquire the skills, knowledge and values needed to provide professional care to the elderly and those facing other health or illness challenges.
