Tip-off Dinner
On Friday, the Chargers hosted the inaugural “Tip-Off Dinner Fundraiser” at Camosun’s Interurban Campus where $23,000 was raised in support of student-athletes.
Award-winning Canadian sports writer Jim Taylor generously donated his time and talent to headline the event where he entertained a full house with his hilarious antics and perspectives on the world of sports both past and present.
The Chargers men’s and women’s basketball teams would like to thank Mr. Taylor and the many generous sponsors of this event: The Times Colonist, Vancouver Island Brewery, Food for Thought, Thrifty Foods, South Vancouver Island Basketball Association, Out of the Blue Designs, Pedersen’s Party Rental, Telus and Robbins Parking.
Alumni game
On Saturday, the Chargers hosted their annual pre-season alumni game at St. Margaret’s School. The Chargers managed to pack the house and entertained fans with some great exhibition basketball.
Alumni on the women’s side included Courtenay Parks, Claire McEwen (2004-05 CCAA Scholar Athlete), Ann Meijer (1994-95 CCAA All-Canadian and 1995-96 & 1994-95 BCCAA All-Star) and Melissa Seymour. The Chargers beat the Alumni team 63-48 (34-23 at the half). Top scorers for Camosun were Kendall Allan with 15 points and Kate Carlson and Jill Proudfoot tied with 8 points each. Courtenay Parks and Tara Beaukamp (UVic) scored 10 each for the Alumni team.
Featured on the men’s alumni bench were Cody Brown, Reagan Daly, Evan Janzen, Jacob Lamb Luke Letham, Joey Loukes, Tyler McTaggart, Chris Owen, and Dr. Olav Krigolson. The Chargers men came out on top beating the Alumni team 90-82 (45-34 at the half). Top scorers for Camosun were Jeff Krawetz with 17 points and Nate Randall and Marek Downarowicz tied with 16 points each. Top scorers for the Alumni team were Chris Trumpy (UVic) with 23 points and Reagan Daly with 16.
Basketball Fundamentals Academy
On Sunday, the Chargers held their first Basketball Fundamentals Academy, led by head coaches Gord Thatcher (men) and Brett Westcott (women).
A total of 55 academy students showed up to fine-tune their skills for the upcoming season. The program offers group training in shooting mechanics, ball handling, post and perimeter play, rebounding techniques and conditioning and nutrition, as well as psychology and mental training.
"We have promising prospects in both groups with full range of ages and skill level,” reported Westcott. “We have really been happy with things so far and we think the athletes have done a good job trying to learn some new skills and break some old habits . We think every athlete will benefit from a little fine-tuning before their season starts in December."
The Academy is open to youth development girls (grades 6-8), high school elite girls (grades 9-12), youth development boys (grades 6-8) and high school elite boys (grades 9-12). Academy athletes receive a reversible practice jersey, shorts, written evaluations and a season pass to Chargers home games.
Upcoming Academy sessions run: Oct. 14, 21, 28, Nov. 4, 18, 25, Dec. 2 and 9. Girls’ sessions start at 10:30 a.m., while the boys’ sessions begin at 11:30 a.m. Cost for the 10 sessions is $195. All proceeds benefit Camosun men's and women's basketball programs.

Upcoming events
This week, the Chargers men’s and women’s basketball teams are preparing for their first exhibition tournament away – the 2007 Blues Basketball Classic, hosted by Capilano College in North Vancouver.
The tournament will feature teams from the British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association (BCCAA) including Malaspina University College, Columbia Bible College, Kwantlen College, Langara College and teams from the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) such as Mt. Royal College (Calgary), NAIT (Edmonton) and Medicine Hat College.
