On October 16 & 17, the Camosun Community will stand up to help eradicate global poverty.
Camosun will draw attention to the local and global effects of poverty with a panel presentation and discussion – panel members from the college community, Student Society, and a local NGO will discuss local and global poverty issues and ways to address them.
- Oct 16 12:30-1:20 pm, Campus Centre 123 (Interurban Campus)
- Oct 17 12:30-2 pm in the Library Classroom (Lansdowne Campus)
Camosun will also be screening the film "Darwin’s Nightmare" Oct 17 2-4 pm Library Classroom (Lansdowne)
Other activities include:
- Stand up and Speak Out international challenge – together with up to 50 million people worldwide, students are invited to present a one minute "stand up and speak out" speech against poverty between 2 pm Oct 16 and 2 pm Oct 17. This needs to be reported to Francis Yee (yee@camosun.bc.ca) before 9 pm on Oct. 17 to be officially counted in the Guinness World Record.
- Wear a White Band – Sales of anti poverty white bands to eradicate poverty, October 16 & 17 (available in the bookstores on both campuses). Proceeds will support children in the Ensingizini Orphanage School in Swaziland www.makepovertyhistory.ca.
- Banners Against Poverty – Boulevard installation of colourful banners, created by students of Visual Arts and Social Sciences at the corner by Foul Bay and Lansdowne Road.
- Book Display on Poverty Issues – organized by Library Services staff at the Lansdowne Campus Library.
Background Information
- 1.2 billion people in the world today live in abject poverty
- More than 800 million people go to bed hungry
- 50,000 people die every day from poverty-related causes
- Several factors contribute to this including: insufficient and ineffective aid, unjust global trade, and overwhelming debt.
