The Camosun Chargers men finished second amongst 14 teams competing for the 2007 PING Canadian Colleges’ Athletic Association (CCAA) National Golf Open Championship this past weekend in Castlegar, BC.

The second place finish earns the Chargers their fifth national championship medal in the sport of golf since 2000, when the CCAA held its first national collegiate golf championship, hosted by Camosun at the Arbutus Ridge Golf and Country Club and the Olympic View Golf Club.

The Humber College Hawks led the tournament throughout all three rounds, finishing in first place with a total of 879. Camosun followed 21 strokes behind with 900 and the University College of the Fraser Valley picked up the bronze with a total of 912.

On the individual scoreboard, James Castle (Humber) earned the gold medal for his three-day score of 215 (-1 par). Incredibly, only one stroke behind was Camosun rookie Phil Kondrak who won silver for his total of 216 (0 par). Third year Chargers veteran Brad Clapp took bronze for his final 219-stroke (+3 par) tally.

“Phil was the only player over the 54-hole tournament to not have scored a double-bogey, or higher,” exclaimed Dunning. “At that golf course that was literally unheard of. His consistent play was a huge motivating force for the entire team.”

Out of 76 golfers, Kondrak and Clapp’s Chargers teammates scored as follows over three rounds:

Finished 13th Kevin Walz 227 (+11 par)
Tied for 20th Eric Smith 232 (+16 par)
Tied for 46th Lee Alarie 240 (+24 par)
Finished 50th Ryan Tofani 242 (+26 par)

Coming home with a national silver medal is not the end of the season for the Chargers. This weekend, the team hosts the British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association’s (BCCAA) fourth and final golf tournament for 2007.

The tournament will determine this year’s BCCAA Provincial Champion and will be played at the Olympic View Golf Club over Saturday, October 20 and Sunday, October 21.
