103 spaces added to the Home Support Resident Care Attendant program

Camosun is offering 103 additional spaces in our highly successful Home Support Resident Care Attendant program (HSRCA). These new spaces will help address Victoria's shortage of skilled workers in the field of senior care. Graduates will be well-prepared for a career as a valued and qualified member of a caring team of health professionals.
- 24-week program, starts January 10, 2008
- Program offered Thursday-Monday evenings
- Starting wage is approximately $20/hour
- There are lots of jobs!
"In conjunction with offering these new educational opportunities, the Island's health authority is opening 1,000 new senior care beds across Vancouver Island," said Dr. Barbara Herringer, Dean of Camosun's School of Health and Human Services. "The 103 seats are in addition to our annual offering of 64 HSRCA spaces, and specifically address employment shortages on the lower Island. We are delighted to have the opportunity to expand our program, which has an excellent reputation with employers and students."
What is HRSCA?
"HSRCA workers are the foundation of senior resident care because they work one-on-one with residents—they are, in fact, the eyes and ears of the healthcare professional team," said Sharon Dixon, chair of Camosun's Continuing Care programs. "HSRCA workers provide necessary personal care, but also contribute to the physical, psychosocial and spiritual components of seniors' daily lives."
The HSRCA program appeals to those who know they are good with people, and want to fast track a career in the field of healthcare. Graduates will be qualified to work in any residential care facility, assisted living residence or home care agency. "Twenty-four percent of our students are men," said Dixon. "In fact, my son is graduating tonight from the program, and he is always telling me heartfelt stories about something funny that happened, an unexpected hug he received or the meaningful relationships he is forging with residents and their families."

- Support people in their daily needs: physical, social, psychological
- Are part of the health care team
- Work in senior care, and also care for others, such a children with special needs

The next intake for the 24-week HSRCA program starts January 10, with an innovative and flexible delivery that will appeal to the working adult or family caregiver: weekend and evening classes. Also, students may be able to take advantage of up to $2,500 in a BC loan reduction once they successfully complete their program.
