Team hits 6-1 record for Fall 2007

November 29, 2007

At this time last year, the Camosun College Chargers women’s basketball team had no wins and seven losses placing them last in the league. This year is a completely different story as the squad ends the first half of the 2007-08 season with a 6-1 record, making them the #2 team in the British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association (BCCAA) and #7 on the national front, in the Canadian Colleges’ Athletic Association (CCAA).

The Chargers’ only loss this semester occurred on the weekend to the top ranked BCCAA team, the University of British Columbia – Okanagan Lakers. The hailing team defeated the Chargers 61-52.

“Okanagan is an experienced group and played well. We now know where we need to go to step up our game”, explained Chargers head coach Brett Westcott.

The Chargers men are 4-3 at the end of the season, placing them third in the BCCAA.

Seven Camosun student-athletes are listed in the top ten individuals in the league for points, assists and rebounds.

Carmen Lapthorne 3rd in assists
Ashley MacKay 5th in points
Jill Proudfoot Tied for 9th in rebounds

The Chargers resume league play in 2008 with games on the road scheduled for January 11 at Columbia Bible College (Abbotsford).

Over the break, the Chargers have an intense exhibition schedule planned.

The men travel to Washington State Nov. 29 – Dec. 1 to play Shoreline Community College (Seattle), Whatcom Community College (Bellingham) and Skagit Valley Community College (Mt. Vernon).

On Nov. 30 – Dec. 2, the women’s team travels up Island to compete in Malaspina’s 3rd Annual Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation Women’s Basketball Tournament.

Both teams will be at home to host the first-ever Chargers Christmas Classic Dec. 27-29 featuring teams from Malaspina University College, Quest University College, King’s College, Grande Prarie Regional College, Mt. Royal College and Seattle.

Following the New Year, the men travel to Calgary on January 3-5, to participate in an exhibition tournament hosted by SAIT (Calgary). Meanwhile, the women cross the pond to compete in the Kwantlen College Winter Basketball Tournament.
