Camosun College is proud to welcome Alison Hitesman as the new head coach of the Chargers women’s volleyball program.

Born in Victoria, Hitesman attended high school in Nova Scotia and graduated from Dalhousie University with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and a diploma in Nursing.

Before returning to Victoria, Hitesman spent several years coaching senior women’s teams in Nova Scotia and running youth development camps in both Nova Scotia and Alberta.

Over the past three years, Hitesman has coached Youth Club volleyball with the Victoria Volleyball Association (VVA). Her coaching experience also includes two years at Baden Cup through the Volleyball BC (VBC) as well as 20 years with the University of Victoria club teams.

Last year, Hitesman worked as Assistant Coach to former Chargers Head Coach, Marty Donatelli. The 2006-07 team made it to its sixth Provincial Championship under the British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association (BCCAA) banner and finished fifth. The berth to Provincials was the first after the Chargers’ three-year hiatus from the BCCAA Championships.

Hitesman’s extensive coaching experience, affiliation with local organizations such as the VVA and VBC and her familiarity with the Chargers program and the BCCAA conference will be vital elements to building Camosun’s 2007-08 squad.

Hitesman is confident and well underway in enlisting players. Four returnees are confirmed, making up the year-two veteran line-up: 5’9’ middle-blocker Ali Thomas (Frances Kelsey), 5’5” power Caitlin Weir (Wellington Secondary), 5’8” right-side Laura Ouliette (Lambrick Park) and 5’9” middle/power Sachi Ihara (Belmont).

New recruits include Tanisha Marcelle (Spectrum, 2006), Courtney Fraser (Belmont, 2007), Sophie Ward (Glenlyon Norfolk, 2007) and Kaeleigh Sercombe (St. Margaret’s, 2007).

“Marcelle is an outstanding power-hitter who has been highly successful both indoors and beach,” remarked Hitesman. “Fraser is a stand-out middle and right-side player who is a force on the VVA U18 and Belmont High School teams. At 6’2”, Ward is looking forward to furthering her development as a middle blocker. Her high caliber of academics and athletic potential will be something to watch for in the upcoming season. Sercombe will also be a great addition, rounding out the mix with strong setting skills.”

The new Camosun coach is hoping to welcome back two more players from this past season.

“We hope to have a couple of players return once they have solidified their educational needs,” said Hitesman. “Both Megan Welle and Dana Allan are on my wish list. I’d love to have them back, but it’s yet to be confirmed.”

Hitesman’s scouting will continue up until the Fall. She is planning a High School Tournament on September 21-22 at St. Margaret’s. In the meantime, she will be actively promoting the sport of volleyball through Camosun and the VVA in an effort to develop a strong community link and feeder system for the sport of women’s volleyball in Victoria.
