S'TENISTOLW: An Indigenous Education Forum May 2β4
May 1, 2007
Camosun's First Nations Education & Services department is hosting S'TENISTOLW (which means "to walk or move forward" in SENCOTEN, the language of the Saanich Nation): An Indigenous Education Forum May 2β4, 2007.
The goal of the conference is to gather educators from the five Vancouver Island public post-secondary institutions and the Aboriginal adult education organizations that are partnered with those institutions.
The expectation is that all groups can learn from each other. Participants all carry vast amounts of knowledge and valuable experience. The First Nations Education & Services department believes the main outcome of this conference may be the development of alliances that result in programming that better meets the needs of Indigenous students and communities on Vancouver Island and surrounding areas.
Keynote speakers include:
- Okanagan author, educator and activist Jeannette Armstrong;
- Saanich language expert John Elliott; and,
- Maori scholar Dr. Graham Smith from New Zealand.
The opening ceremony will take place at the Esquimalt Nation longhouse on Wednesday evening, May 2. The bulk of the conference will be in the Campus Centre at Interurban campus on May 3 and 4.
