First Men's Volleyball title game for Mastodons and Lundeen

May 4, 2007

Home town hero and former Camosun College Chargers setter Colin Lundeen and the Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne (IPFW) Mastodons made history last night in Columbus Ohio, winning their NCAA semi-final match against America’s top-seeded collegiate team, the Pepperdine Waves.

IPFW defeated a stunned Pepperdine 3-1 (27-30, 30-27, 30-27, and 30-25).

Senior Setter Colin Lundeen was instrumental in the win, outplaying Pepperdine setter and NCAA Player of the Year, Jonathan Winder. Lundeen had 64 assists to Winder's 57. Lundeen also had a solo block and four block assists to Winder's two block assists.

The historical win advances the Mastodons to their first National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) title game.

IPFW (named for the school’s affiliation with Indiana and Purdue universities and its hometown of Fort Wayne) has qualified for six NCAA final fours but had never before won a semifinal.

Several hundred fans from the Fort Wayne area made the 150-mile trip to the NCAA Championships at Ohio State University to support the fourth-seeded Mastodons.

IPFW’s advance to the NCAA Finals is not only a first in the school’s history, but also stands as only the third time that a team from the East Coast or Mid-West has reached the national championship match.

Facing Lundeen and the Mastodons in the Championship match are the Anteaters of University of Califorina-Irvine (UCI). UCI topped Penn State, 3-1 in yesterday’s second NCAA semi-final match.

This year's NCAA Champion will be a first timer. Neither the Mastodons nor the Anteaters have captured a men's volleyball national championship. IPFW’s record against UCI is 3-1.

The NCAA Championship Match can be seen on ESPN2, Saturday at 4:00pm.
