$40,000 in building materials from local companies donated to high schools

March 27, 2007

Vancouver Island Construction Association President Greg Baynton is pleased to announce the donation of over $40,000 in building materials from several Victoria companies to support local high school students pursuing a career in construction through the trades programs at their schools and Camosun College.

The companies are donating lumber, nails, ties, casing, roofing materials and electrical supplies to schools involved in the South Island Partnership (SIP) carpentry and electrical trades programs. The partnership program gives high school students a head-start by allowing them to earn college credits in the trades before they graduate from Grade 12.

Gulf Island Secondary, Belmont Secondary, Edward Milne Community, Reynolds Secondary, Spectrum Community, Victoria High, Parkland Secondary and Stelly’s Secondary schools are all receiving material donations to help support young students and their ambitions to pursue career opportunities in the construction trades.

“The labour and skills shortage is the number one challenge facing the construction industry today,” says Greg Baynton. “Students and trades programs are essential to addressing the 55,000 construction positions being created over the next three years in BC and up to 7,000 of these positions are on Vancouver Island.”

“These donations are going to help our high school partnership construction programs tremendously,” says Kelly Knister, coordinator of SIP. “The Vancouver Island Construction Association has been instrumental in working with local industry to secure these much needed materials and well as in encouraging and supporting students who are considering a career in construction.”

Companies donating to the cause include: Farmer Construction Ltd.; Knappett Projects Inc.; Coastal Construction Ltd.; Chandler Construction Ltd.; Bear Mountain Properties; Slegg Lumber; Home Lumber and Building Supplies; National Concrete and Kinetic Construction; Scansa Construction; Canem Systems Ltd., EH Emery Electric Ltd.; Henneberry Electrical Contractors Ltd.; and, Houle Electric Ltd.

The Vancouver Island Construction Association, the Canadian Homebuilders Association (Victoria), Camosun College and the local School Districts are all partners in the Greater Victoria Construction Skills Council. The Council is a cooperative partnership whose mandate is to promote construction as a viable and preferred career opportunity for students in Greater Victoria.
