New courses

ANTH 270: Culture, Health and Illness
An introduction to medical anthropology, this course includes the study of health and illness from a cross-cultural perspective. Drawing on ethnographic materials from Western and non-Western societies, the course explores how health and illness are interpreted and mediated through culture.

GEOG 250: Latin America & the Caribbean
This course studies the physical and human characteristics of Latin America, including the Caribbean region. Topics of focus include physical environment, demographics, economics, culture, urbanization and environmental issues. The course presents theories and strategies of development and land use through case studies in the region.

GEOG 111: Natural Hazards
This course introduces the natural environmental processes underlying hazards like earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides and floods. It also looks at how human influence can turn hazards into disasters, or effectively mitigate them. An emphasis on current events is maintained. The course is intended for both science and non-science majors.

MATH 107 – Precalculus: Business & Social Science
This course provides a foundation for applied calculus for students in business, social sciences, biology and environmental studies. Students away from mathematics for more than a year should refresh with MATH 073 or 092. Topics: algebra review, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions and a brief introduction to calculus. (T)
Prerequisite(s): C+ in Math 11 or MATH 073, or a C- in Math 12, or a C in both Math 11 and FIN 110, or assessment

MATH 213 – Math for Elementary Education
A survey of mathematical techniques and methods with a focus on analytical skills and problem solving. Topics include: Mathematical Ways of Thinking, Problem Solving Strategies, Numeration Systems Past and Present, Number Theory, Sequences, Euclidean and Non-Euclidean Geometry, Strategy and Games, Cryptography, Statistical Duplicity. New programs

Creative Writing - Associate Degree Arts

This two-year program enables you to explore a career in writing and gain a broad understanding of each of four writing genres—fiction, non-fiction, playwriting, poetry—while also completing a range of courses in the liberal arts and sciences. You'll complete at least three first-year and two second-year writing courses. The Associate of Arts Degree in Creative Writing establishes a beginning level of expertise and familiarity with the field which prepares graduates to continue their education in one of two directions: journalism or creative writing.

Childhood Developmental Psychopathology

This program teaches theory, research and applications related to the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of a variety of psychological disorders in childhood and adolescence, with an in-depth focus on those disorders most encountered in the education field.

As a graduate of the program you'll have the knowledge and skills to understand contributing factors of childhood disorders along with specific pedagogical techniques needed to effect positive change in children with these designations, especially those between the ages of five and nineteen.

Community Support & Education Assistant

Make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities in your community and use your passion for the rights of children, youth and adults to help them live full and satisfying lives.

You can make a difference, one person at a time. Develop your skills and knowledge about disability issues, advocacy, social justice, health and wellness, and teaching and learning supports through the Community Support and Education Assistant Program.

Associate of Science Degree - Pre-Medicine

This new program provides a full two years of university studies designed especially if you intend to pursue a career in medicine. The completed Associate Degree will allow you to transfer smoothly into 3rd year studies at universities such as UBC or UVic, where you'll complete the courses required for entrance into medical school.

Associate of Science Degree - Geography

As a graduate of the new Geography program, you'll be able to find employment in areas such as meteorology or hydrology. The program will also meet transfer requirements for UVic’s Geography Science program if you decide to continue into 3rd year studies.
