Camosun College and China-based Maple Leaf Educational Systems Ltd. enter into a ground-breaking partnership today as they sign a Memorandum of Agreement to develop and deliver the curriculum for a new post-secondary Home Support Assistant—International Diploma in China, beginning September 2007. The curriculum, to be a modification of Camosun’s highly successful Home Support/Resident Care Attendant program, will be specially designed by Camosun College to address a critical need in China’s emerging homecare industry.

Chinese students will study at the Maple Leaf Institute of Technology and will earn a Camosun College Home Support Assistant—International Diploma. The curriculum will be developed and owned by Camosun College, and the college will play an important role in training the instructors, setting academic standards and identifying requirements for facilities, supplies and equipment. Camosun will also play a vital role in program quality assurance.

“This is an exciting opportunity for Camosun College to share their excellent reputation and expertise in curriculum development and contribute to educational development and training on a global basis,” says Dawn Sutherland, director of Camosun College International. “The greatest immediate benefit from this program will be to individuals and families in China who have an urgent need for qualified, trained caregivers to assist in the care of elderly parents and young children. This need is driven by an ever-increasing incidence of both parents working outside the home in modern China.”

The signing of the agreement is the culmination of conversations between Camosun College and Maple Leaf Educational Systems Ltd., and builds on the strong east/west relationship that already exists between the BC Ministry of Education and the Dalian Maple Leaf International School. This school has been delivering an offshore BC school curriculum to Chinese students for the past eight years and its graduates have been coming Camosun College since 1998.

Camosun College International has a mandate to identify opportunities for overseas delivery of our college programs with a number of objectives: to generate revenue for the college; to provide opportunities for internationalization of our college (e.g., through staff and student exchanges and changes to our curriculum); to build our reputation as providers of quality educational products and services, and to contribute to educational development on a global basis where we have the ability to do so.
