The exhibition coincided with the international conference of the Furniture Society, featuring demonstration equipment provided by conference sponsor Powermatic.

Cam Russell, chair of Camosun’s Architectural Trades department, learned of the gift following a demonstration by well known woodworker and instructor Ernie Conover. At the end of his session, Ernie announced that Powermatic wished to donate the “as new” table saw and wood lathe to Camosun rather than ship them back to their US factory.

“We could never have bought this equipment on our own,” said Russell. “It sets us up for next year, and allows us to donate our old table saw to the carpentry program so even more students benefit.”

Another milestone of Camosun’s Fine Furniture program is the 20-year retrospective, now on at the University of Victoria’s McPherson Library Gallery. This display showcases 31 pieces from graduates spanning the 20-year history of Fine Furniture instruction at the College. Visitors will see everything from tables and desks to seating and chests. Embellishments include laminated curves and inlaying, with materials ranging from local wood to exotics such walrus ivory and ebony accents.

Exhibitors include (among others):

Exhibit runs until August 20, 2007 at the McPherson Library Gallery
. The Gallery is open Monday – Thursday 8am to 9pm; Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday/Sunday 10am to 6pm

Camosun’s 10-month Fine Furniture Program teaches students the technical aspects of furniture making while emphasizing creative thought in structural preparation. About one-third of Camosun’s Fine Furniture graduates become self-employed while others find employment in local joinery and mill shops.
