Alicia Rose receives 2007 Citizenship Education Award from Coast Capital Savings

Camosun Chargers alumna Alicia Rose is one of only 60 students in British Columbia to receive the 2007 Citizenship Education Award from Coast Capital Savings Credit Union.
The $2,000 Citizenship Award honours individuals who have worked diligently to achieve a good balance between school and personal activities, and in turn have made a positive impact on their communities.
“I’m thrilled,” said Alicia, who is currently enrolled in Camosun’s Accounting diploma program. “The funding will make a huge difference in helping me complete my education and balance my responsibilities at home, work and school.”
“When I received the letter in the mail, I thought it was only an update on the progress of my application. But when I opened the letter, I found out I won the $2,000 Citizenship Award, and that’s when I started crying with joy! This award helps me get one step closer to my goal of becoming an accountant.”
Being a former Charger (2002-2004 and 2005-06), Alicia knows first-hand the difficulties of juggling school, work and the responsibilities of being a varsity athlete.
Five years ago when her mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, Alicia was left to manage the household as well as her mother’s personal and emotional care—a huge responsibility for a 19-year old.
Not only did she manage things at home, she remarkably stayed in school full-time, acted as co-captain of the Chargers women’s basketball team, took on a part-time job and stepped in to fill the role of parent and role model to her brother.
In her second year with the program, Alicia won the prestigious Camosun College President’s Cup for achieving the highest academic standing for the year while demonstrating a high-level commitment to the intercollegiate athletics program. She was also the recipient of the 2004 Executive Network Inc / Donald Family Annual Leadership Award for overcoming exceptional circumstances and for demonstrating strong leadership.
Although she no longer plays for the Chargers, Alicia makes it a priority to stay healthy and positive by being active in a variety of sports whenever she can.
“Sport is my life; it’s what keeps me going. It has helped me grow into the person I am today. My attitude, whether on the court, at school or at home, is to never give up! I have to be strong—especially for my Mom. There is no room for quitters in my life.”
Alicia’s goal this year is to complete her diploma and continue her studies in Camosun’s new Bachelor of Business Administration – Accounting Degree program.
