Camosun students win Canadian Millennium Scholarships

Camosun College President Dr. Liz Ashton is pleased to announce two Camosun College students have been selected by the Federal Government’s Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation to receive the 2006 National In-Course Millennium Excellence Awards.
The Government of Canada Millennium Excellence awards are given to post-secondary students in their second or third year of study recognizing their academic accomplishments, community service, leadership and innovative contributions.
Ann Whiteaker, a second-year business student in Camosun’s accounting and management program and Serina Zapf, a second-year social sciences student, each receive a $4,000 Millennium Scholarship (renewable for one year) and a Certificate of Achievement.
Whiteaker and Zapf were recognized with their award and certificate at the Camosun College Board of Governors meeting, February 6.
A single mother of three, Ann Whiteaker graduates from Camosun later this summer with a double diploma in accounting and management. Her ultimate goal is to get her CMA (Chartered Management Accountant) designation, but initially she’d like to go back to work for a while. Whiteaker is also extremely active in her children’s schools, spending countless hours on parent advisory committees. She is currently the Director for the Victoria Confederation of Parents Advisory Council.
Upon learning of her award Whiteaker said she was “relieved.” “As a busy, single mom, this scholarship will go a long way to help pay my student loans,” she said.
Serina Zapf is now a student at the University of Victoria studying third-year political science with a minor in anthropology. Zapf plans to graduate in two years and work in the area of human rights.
“I found my anthropology courses at Camosun most exciting and rewarding,” says Zapf. “I chose to go to Camosun because of its great relationship with UVic. I’m so excited to receive this scholarship. It will help me with my living expenses over the next two years.”
“On behalf Camosun College, I congratulate Ann and Serina on their tremendous achievements and wish them both the very best in their studies and in their careers,” said Ashton.
