Thirty-two deserving Camosun College students will each receive a $5,000 scholarship recognizing their excellent academic achievement and community service.

The Irving K. Barber Scholarship Fund, named for the BC philanthropist and founder of Slocan Forest Products Ltd., was established in 2006. "These scholarships are an investment in the skills and talents of students in BC," said Dr. Barber, who is well known for his commitment to education and research in British Columbia. "They help students obtain their post-secondary degrees while rewarding their outstanding accomplishments, both in the classroom and in the community."

"On behalf of Camosun College, I am so proud to congratulate these exceptional students," said Camosun College President Dr. Liz Ashton. "Their success really emphasizes the preparedness of our graduates and the high quality of our academic teaching here at Camosun. The 32 recipients demonstrate the diversity and success of our academic options."

This year 85 BC students qualified for the prestigious Irving K. Barber scholarships and, for the second consecutive year, Camosun students represent the largest number of recipients from a single institution. People in BC are fortunate to have a wide variety of excellent post-secondary institutions to choose from. The Barber scholarships encourage students to pursue the high quality and affordable option of starting their studies at a college closer to home.

Eligible students must maintain a minimum GPA of 6.5 (85%), demonstrate service to their school or community, complete two years of study at a public college, university college or institute, and be transferring to a degree-granting BC university to complete their degrees.

Working in partnership with the Victoria Foundation, the Irving K. Barber BC Scholarship Society provides a variety of scholarships to students attending public post-secondary institutions both throughout the province and internationally. To date, the Society has awarded over $1.2 million in scholarships.

Students wishing to apply for the Irving K. Barber scholarships should contact Financial Aid at either campus. Find out more about the Irving K. Barber Scholarship at www.bcscholarship.ca

Application deadline is March 32, 2008.
