Camosun’s carpentry skills shine at event

April 20, 2007

Adam Tyrell, a recent level 3 Carpentry training student, won a Silver medal in the annual Post-Secondary Carpentry Skills Canada competition on April 18 in Abbotsford. Adam represented Camosun in a field of 10 competitors from BCIT, Malaspina, Thompson River University, and Okanagan College.

“Students from the Camosun Carpentry department have won 5 provincial gold and 2 silver medals in a row between 2000 and 2005, along with a national gold in 2002 and a national bronze in 2004,” said Cam Russell, Chair of Camosun’s Carpentry department. “While we were shut out of the medals in the 2006 competition, we are very happy to be back on track with the silver medal that Adam Tyrell won for us yesterday.”

Jason Moulton, a current level 3 apprentice at Camosun, narrowly missed the bronze medal by 0.5%.

The yearly competition is part of the BC Skills Competition, where students from across BC compete in over 35 different events in the skilled trades and technology areas. Over 500 people competed in the hopes of advancing and representing BC at the Canadian Skills Competition in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
